Grace by
Jodie Atherton. (4x5x7 inches) Mixed-media including recycled scraps,
copper wiring,
crayons, and crayon box.
Ancestry,
Evolutionary Lapse, and Hell #1 by Kirk VanDyke. (4x4x14
inches) The poem
that inspired this piece first appeared in hatred of one's
fascination
with an idea of wilderness (Aedeagus Press LLC). Both the poem
and the
art book represent one's inescapable genetic makeup, the concepts of
adaptive evolution, and the awareness of those processes in winter's
silence. Mixed-media including replica of original painting, recycled
wiring and wire mesh.
A 9 Month
Winter #1by Kirk
VanDyke. (4x1x8 inches) The poem that inspired this piece first
appeared in Wyoming
Fence
Lines Anthology (Wyoming Humanities Council). Winter at
7,200
feet in the central Rocky Mountains can come during any month of the
year, but is usually limited to 9 months of the year. The fall and
spring months experience extreme shifts in temperatures, being mild one
day and blizzarding the next. Mixed-media including original painting,
recycled wiring, and mineral load survey tags.
A Clay Layer
A
Sand Layer by Kirk VanDyke first appeared in literary form in
The Golden
Lantern. Both the poem and the multi-media book
representation came from a 5 month period drilling for uranium in
Wyoming's Red Desert. The environmental movement that stopped uranium
exploration in the U.S. during the late 70's and early 80's eventually
caused a resurgence in commodity prices after 2005. This time the issue
was uranium's advantages over carbon-based fuels in low greenhouse gas
emitions.
A Clay Layer
A
Sand Layer
#1.
(6x1x11 inches)
Mixed-media
including
original
acryllic
painting, recycled wiring, and mineral load survey tags. The wiring and
survey tags are physical representations of society's insaciable energy
demands in the information age.
A Clay Layer
A
Sand Layer
#2
drilling. (5x5x7 inches) Mixed-media including original
acryllic painting and recycled wiring in a hanging representation of a
drill rig. The poem is wrapped around the rig, but drilling hasn't
begun. The image represents both the dangerous and masculine aspects of
energy exploration.
A Clay Layer
A
Sand Layer #3 standing.
(2x1x3 inches)
Mixed-media
including
replica
of
original painting, recycled wiring and wire mesh. The wire mesh
represents Buddhist philosophy in action while limited by physical
restrictions.
A Clay Layer
A
Sand Layer
#4.
(3x3x16
inches) Mixed-media
including
replica
of original
painting, recycled wiring and wire mesh. This piece incorporates the
philosophy shown in #2 and #3 of the same name, but this time the book
section opens from above (drillers and geologists) with the "string"
cutting through alternating sand and clay deposits from previous
ecosystems.
